The second webinar (2nd webinar SDGs flyer) in the World Commision on Environmental Law Early Career Group webinar series will be held on Sunday (18th October) at 9pm Australian Eastern (Brisbane) Time. 

This webinar explores the interaction between the Sustainable Development Goals and the law. Five speakers from Asia, Europe, Australasia and Latin America explore this interaction from multiple perspectives.

Dr Volker Mauerhofer – The contribution of law to achieving sustainable development

Volker Mauerhofer received his Masters and Doctorate degrees in Laws from the University of Graz, Austria (1993/1998 with Honours) and his Masters degree in Natural Sciences from the University of Vienna, Austria (1999). Dr Mauerhofer has passed the bar exam in Austria and holds an MA in Ecological Economics from the University of Leeds, United Kingdom (2003). Dr Mauerhofer is a Lecturer at the University of Vienna holding courses in the Master program Nature Conservation & Biodiversity Management. He holds various visiting positions, such as Visiting Professor at UNU IAS (United Nations University, Institute of the Advanced Study of Sustainability,Japan). Dr Mauerhofer has conducted research and freelance consulting on biodiversity related issues for more than 15 years in more than 40 countries on all continents (more at https://homepage.univie.ac.at/volker.mauerhofer/


Dr Rakhyun Kim- Ecological integrity as a Grundnorm of International Law and overarching principle for the SDGs?

Dr Rakhyun E. Kim is a Research Fellow at Griffith Law School. He is an interdisciplinary scholar in the field of environmental law and governance. Dr Kim received a PhD in international environmental law from the Australian National University (Fenner School of Environment and Society) (“pass with no corrections”), a Master of Environmental Law (Faculty of Law) (First Class Honours), a Master of Science (School of Environment), and a Bachelor of Science (School of Environment) from the University of Auckland, New Zealand. His studies were supported by an ANU PhD Scholarship and two Korea Foundation Postgraduate Studies Fellowships.


Yomayra J.Martinó – The SDGs, Climate Change and Disaster Risk Management

Yomayra J. Martinó is the Coordinator of the ¨Third National Communication of the Dominican Republic on Climate Change for the United Nation Framework Convention on Climate Change (3rdNatCom)”, a project of the National Council on Climate Change and Clean Development Mechanism, jointly with The Ministry of Environment, and The United Nations Development Program (UNDP). Martinó has a Juris Doctor from the Universidad Iberoamericana (UNIBE) in the Dominican Republic with expertise in the areas of environmental law, climate change, and energy regulations. Martinó also holds a Master degree in “Policy, Legislation, and Environmental Management” under the “DR-CAFTA Capacity Building Program¨ sponsored by USAID and implemented by the universities: Tulane of the US, Rafael Landivar University in Guatemala , and Universidad Iberoamericana (UNIBE) in Dominican Republic, and a LLM in ¨Law and Economics¨, from Pontificia Universidad Católica Madre y Maestra (PUCMM) in Dominican Republic.


Taimur Khan – Green energy and the SDGs

Taimur Khan is a partner at AJ Khan Law Associates. The firm specialises in environmental litigation and consultancy. He was formerly a consultant to the Attorney-General of Pakistan. He has particular expertise in the areas of corporate, constitutional, finance and environmental law. Taimur is an editor of Environment Monitor, a leading environmental journal dedicated to the preservation and protection of the environment. He holds an LLB from Punjab University Law College where he earned a gold medal. Taimur also holds an MBA in Banking and Finance from Allama Iqbal University. He was awarded the Dean’s tuition fellowship for the LLM program at the University of California, Los Angeles.


Dr Nafiseh Jafarzadeh – Data, Assessment and Monitoring for the SDGs

Dr Nafiseh Jafarzadeh is an interdisciplinary scholar in the field of international environmental law. Her research focuses on implementation of global environmental conventions through the science-policy interface, enforcement and compliance, and on accountability in global environmental governance. She has interdisciplinary industrial and academic background and holds Environmental Engineering, Science, Management, and Law degree. Her areas of expertise are in global environmental assessments and monitoring of sustainability performance for the state of environment. Nafiseh wrote her PhD thesis on measuring, reporting and monitoring mechanisms in international environmental law at Macquarie University Australia.
